The Hyrtl Skull Collection reflects the work of Josef Hyrtl (1810-1894), a Viennese anatomist whose collection of 139 human skulls were studied to negate the claims of scientists who believed that cranial features were factors indicating differences in personality and intelligence often based on race. The Mütter Museum acquired the collection in 1874.
